Editorial standards
The principles that govern our reporting.
Last updated
These standards apply to everything we publish, whether written by a staff reporter, a contributor, or drafted with the help of software.
Accuracy and verification
- We prefer primary sources: official announcements, filings, documentation, research papers and on-the-record interviews.
- Significant claims require independent corroboration. Several outlets republishing the same report count as one source, not several.
- We distinguish clearly between confirmed facts, statements attributed to a person or organisation, analysis, and claims we could not verify.
- We do not publish quotations, statistics, product features, release dates or announcements that we cannot support.
Attribution and sourcing
We link to the sources we relied on. When we build on another outlet's original reporting, we credit it. We do not reproduce substantial portions of other publications' work.
Independence
Our editorial decisions are made by editors. Advertisers, sponsors and affiliate partners do not review or approve coverage before publication.
Labelling
- Opinion and analysis are labelled as such.
- Sponsored content is produced for or by a paid partner, carries a prominent label, and is kept visually distinct from our journalism.
- Articles containing affiliate links carry a disclosure.
Fairness and impartiality
- We report politics, elections and contested public questions fairly. We describe people and groups in the terms they would recognise, avoid loaded language, and represent significant viewpoints accurately.
- People and organisations facing serious allegations are given a fair opportunity to respond before publication, and we report their response.
- Polls, statistics and official figures are reported with their source, date and limitations.
- Health and science coverage follows the weight of evidence. A single study is not presented as settled science, and we do not give medical advice.
Sensitive coverage
Stories involving security vulnerabilities, active incidents, legal allegations, health or financial claims, politics, or personal information receive additional editorial review before publication. We follow responsible disclosure norms and avoid publishing details that would enable active harm.
Corrections
When we get something wrong we fix it promptly and say so. See our corrections policy.
