Corrections policy
How we correct, clarify and update our work.
Last updated
We correct errors of fact promptly and transparently.
Types of changes
- Correction: a factual error was fixed. A note at the top of the article explains what changed.
- Clarification: the original wording was accurate but could be misunderstood.
- Update: new information became available after publication.
- Retraction: in rare cases, when an article's central premise is unsupported, we retract it and explain why. Retracted articles remain online with a prominent notice so the record is preserved.
Each article shows when it was first published and when it was last updated.
